Travel Checklist for UK Travellers to Europe

Passports, border rules, health cover and money before you go.

Updated November 2026 · Cheap Holiday Fly

Since Brexit, there are a few extra rules for British passport holders visiting the EU. Check these before you book so nothing spoils your trip. Rules can change, so always check the latest GOV.UK foreign travel advice for your country.

1. Your passport

For most EU countries (the Schengen area), your passport must be:

Check both dates. Passport renewals can take a few weeks, so do not leave it late.

2. The 90-day rule

As a tourist you can usually stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is plenty for a normal holiday.

3. New border checks

The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) started in October 2025. The first time you enter, you may have your fingerprints and photo taken at the border, so queues can be longer. Allow extra time, especially at busy ports like Dover. A separate online travel permit called ETIAS is planned for the future. Check GOV.UK to see if it has started before you travel.

4. Health cover: GHIC

A UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) lets you get state healthcare in the EU at a reduced cost or free. It is free from the NHS website. Never pay a website to get one. A GHIC is not the same as travel insurance.

5. Travel insurance

Buy it as soon as you book, so you are covered if you have to cancel. Make sure it covers any medical conditions you have.

6. Money

7. Phone

Some UK mobile networks now charge for using your phone in Europe. Check with your network before you go.
