How to Avoid Budget Airline Extra Fees

Keep a cheap flight cheap: bags, seats, check-in and more.

Updated November 2026 · Cheap Holiday Fly

A low fare is only cheap if you avoid the extras. Budget airlines make a lot of money from bags, seats and fees at the airport. Here is how to keep your flight cheap.

1. Know your bag allowance

Most budget fares only include one small under-seat bag. A larger cabin bag or a hold bag usually costs extra. The sizes are different for each airline and they do change, so always check the airline's own website before you fly.

2. Check in online

Some airlines charge a fee to check in at the airport. Check in online or in the app as soon as it opens, and keep your boarding pass on your phone (or print it).

3. Skip paid seats if you do not need them

If you do not choose a seat, the airline gives you one free. If you are travelling with children, check the airline's rules, as many will seat young children with an adult.

4. Bring your own food and an empty bottle

Food on board is expensive. Take snacks, and bring an empty water bottle to fill after security.

5. Watch out at checkout

When booking, look carefully for boxes that add insurance, car hire or priority boarding. Only keep what you really need.

6. Compare the total price

A flight with a bag included on another airline can be cheaper in total. Add up fare + bags + seats before you decide.
